You Didn't Wake Up Old One Day!

You didn't go to sleep one night and wake up a month, a year, a decade older! You are just the same as you were yesterday... and the day before.

Ageing is the strangest process. Somewhere along the way, we notice a few grey hairs and wrinkles. We might get achey joints and saggy knees. We might forget a few things, or get a little slower. But inside we are still the same person we used to be, with likes and loves, hopes and dreams, and a wish to live on this beautiful earth for a good while longer.

Where Is That Young Girl?

So where did that young girl go? The one who danced all night, and sang all day. The girl who kicked up leaves, jumped in puddles and danced in the rain, never worrying if she would get wet? Who climbed up trees and skimmed her knees? The child filled with wonder and excitement and a thirst for living?

Well I am not suggesting you start climbing the tallest tree you can find, and perhaps some of that energy has gone. You maybe can't run as fast, climb as high, but there is still so much you can do. Start new adventures, learn new skills, make new friends, go to new places. There is a whole world out there and just because we are getting a little older, it doesn't mean to say we don't belong in it.

Take a Chance

One of the great things about being older is that we still have all these wonderful dreams still inside, but we have the added advantage of wisdom and experience. We can take a chance, and it is more likely to be successful because we have used our knowledge and skills to work out whether it is a right fit for us.

There are many advantages to learning new things as we age, and it can be of great benefit both mentally and physically. For example hiking or orienteering can reduce stress and increase our fitness, aid sleep etc. Yoga and Meditation can help us be calm, reduce blood pressure and stress levels, as well as help with balance, mobility and flexibility.

Dare to dream...if your dream was to be an artist, go to a painting class, if you always wanted to write a novel, start writing. If you loved travel but are worried you are too old, look at new ways to travel, perhaps a cruise or a coach tour. Do what makes you happy. You deserve it!

So Much To Do, So Many choices

We are the lucky ones, as there have never been more opportunities for older people to be at the centre of life. We can volunteer overseas, start a blog, be an influencer. We can mentor others and share our skills and knowledge. We can even go to university if we want (there is no age restriction on tuition fees in England), we can take online courses, join a theatre group. We have so much to offer, and so much yet to do.Why waste our time?

We can study philosophy, history, archeology, learning about our past and how it connects to our present and our future. There are talks from interesting people all over the country, as well as book fairs, food festivals, revivals, country house auctions, concerts, recitals, or a thousand other ways for you to enjoy spending your time.

A Great Big World Waiting For You

So what is your passion? What fills your heart with joy and, if you are not doing it, what is stopping you? Of course, as we age we might have some limitations, but if you can't do something, find an alternative that makes you smile and your heart sing.

Challenge yourself, feel excited, look for new adventures, explore new possibilities. You might be surprised to find that little girl who had a dream of being a novelist or artist can still have her dream come true and if not, maybe you might have a lot of fun trying :)
