A Little Side Hustle

For the majority of people retirement brings many benefits, freedom to spend your time how you choose, taking up new hobbies, travelling, learning new things, catching up with friends. For others there is too much time, perhaps they were very busy at work and leisure time was limited, leaving them with hours of time to do nothing. They become bored.

Some people may miss the salary that comes in each month and find themselves worrying about spending money. Retirement should be about enjoyment, so if you can do something you love and earn a little extra, that sounds like a win/win :)

So what can you do? Well first, always choose something you are passionate about. Research shows that businesses are far more likely to be successful if it is enjoyable. Then write down a little plan of your side hustle

*Things you could consider doing

*How much time you want to spend

*Skills you may need to learn

*How much, if any, you want to invest

Side hustles can be anything at all. Crafting, consulting, online teaching, up-cycling, virtual p.a., delivery etc. But with he advantage of having a pension coming in each month, it does allow you to choose something you love rather than just because you have to. Below I have added a few sample but there are literally hundreds so put your thinking cap on :)

Celebrant

Celebrants are one of the fastest growing new careers in the UK and many don't begin until they are fifty, sixty, and even beyond. A Celebrant conducts a variety of ceremonies including weddings, funeral, divorce healing, pet bereavement, naming ceremonies etc. They meet clients , write the ceremonial script and service plan and preside over the ceremony. If you like writing, creating and meeting people and have great organisational skills this could be the perfect side hustle for you.

Crafter

With so many online sites to sell your crafts as well as a huge number of craft fairs up and down the country, this is an excellent way to have a little side hustle and do something you love! Crafting includes jewellery making, pottery, mosaics, knitting, sewing, weaving, leatherwork, candle making, spa making and hundreds more.

If you enjoy crafting it can be not only a great way to make extra money, but an excellent way to be busy and make new friends.

Consultant

If you are an expert in a particular field, you could work as a consultant sharing your knowledge and expertise with. others. Consultancy can cover many areas including accountancy, marketing, financial, medical, law, etc.

You may choose to work with individual clients, businesses or media, for example tv. Consultants have. a lot to offer as they can also mentor people and help develop their careers.

Up-cycling

Who doesn't really enjoy putting a little love into something and expanding its life by a few years? I know I do! Going to car boots, auctions, country house sales can be really exciting, picking up a bargain to lovingly restore and resell. You can up-cycle almost anything from clothes, jewellery, furniture, garden equipment, cameras and even cycles!

Wedding Planner

Wedding Planners are hired by couples to help create, design and oversee the wedding. This may include guest list, seating arrangements, meal planning, catering, looking for venues, flowers, etc.

Wedding Planners need to be well organised, calm, creative and stay calm under pressure. You need to be an excellent communicator, enjoy people and ensure your couples day is perfect. If this sounds like you, this could be an excellent way to make additional money as Wedding Planners often receive 10-15% of the whole budget!

Antique Dealer

If you have. love for old things, enjoy going to antique auctions and have a sound knowledge of antiques this could be an excellent side hustle. You will be meeting lots of people from other dealers, auctioneers, valuers, shop owners, buyers. It is a really interesting line of work and can work around your daily life perfectly.

Film/TV Extra

Working as an extra for tv or films can be really interesting. It is unlikely that you will become famous and you may need to stand around for long periods of time, but it can be really interesting.

Payment varies enormously but is generally around £100-140 per day plus meals and, sometimes, expenses. You would need to find an agency (never hand over any money without thoroughly researching the agency) but they are always looking for a range of people so age, gender, size, shape, looks are irrelevant.

Above are just a few suggestions for a side hustle but, as I mentioned, please do something you really enjoy. You have probably spent your whole life working and now it's time for you. So while you may want to fill a few hours, or earn a little extra, enjoy it :)
